Yes, you read that right.
Allaya Cooks-Campbell will be opening a studio, under the name Alaya Yoga, LLC, in Queens later this year (2017).
We've chosen a location, and we're currently in the midst of fundraising. Have questions? Check out the FAQ below.
What?! You're opening a studio?
Why, yes. Yes, I am.
Well, to be honest, it's for a few reasons.
- I don't love corporate America. Working nine-to-five is just not me. I've always been an entrepreneur at heart and building in this way makes me happy, even though in many ways it's much more work.
- I do love yoga (and the yoga community). This studio is a way for me to share the benefits I've gotten from my own practice with people who, like me, have to hike to all kinds of places to take a yoga class. It's also an opportunity for me to treat my teachers as I would want to be treated — and that includes competitive pay, incentives, recognition, support and continuing education.
- I need someplace to practice closer to my house.
Isn't starting a business expensive?
Where will the studio be?
We've chosen a location in Flushing, Queens. This allows us to be central to many neighborhoods that don't often have access to a high-quality yoga experience without a lengthy commute. Those neighborhoods include Cambria Heights, St. Albans and Queens Village (via the Q27 line), Whitestone (Q), College Point (Q25) and Jamaica (Q17/Q34). It's also near the 7 line.
Um, did you know you spelled your name wrong?
The studio isn't named after me. In Buddhism, the alaya-conciousness is the place where all of your karma, experiences, thoughts, words and deeds are stored. There, in this storehouse, they transform into the seeds of your new path. I wanted this to be the name of my studio because I wanted it to represent a new path for me, my students and the community that we will call home.
In Sanskrit, the language of yoga, alaya means “that which cannot be dissolved.” I hope that my students will find that the benefits of practicing yoga do not easily dissipate, and in fact, last a lifetime.
Are you hiring?
Yes. We will need yoga teachers, mat Pilates instructors, administrative staff and karma yogis. If you're interested in hosting a workshop, event or training in the space, we'd also love to hear from you. You can email me here to get the ball rolling. I will also post a formal request for applicants when we get closer to our opening date.
When will you be open?
We are intending to open by Thanksgiving 2017 (I'll keep you updated as construction gets underway)!
